Chip Seal Cost
We Will Not Break The Bank
The cost of chip seal or as it is sometimes called “tar and chip” for a driveway is almost always less expensive than standard new blacktop driveway. The rule of thumb prices per square foot of chip sealing for roads is different for doing a driveway. The setup cost and mobilization can be high relative to the whole job if the driveway square footage is small. When estimating a bigger chip seal project, production factors set in. With bigger projects, mobilization costs are proportionally less. Doing long straight sections with little hand work may affect the cost. Chip sealing a lot of private drives in a community is less expensive per square yard foot than doing a small driveway with chip seal.
Details are crisp and sharp
Proper prep and care of installation produces clean and detailed installations
Driveways can be small and intricate places with stone edging, landscaping and buildings with all these features needing to be protected from the hot asphalt spray application. We know how to do this and do it well, but care has to be taken. These variables are all part of the estimate and reflected in the cost. We are happy to visit your property to evaluate the situation and give you a fair price.
Factors in the Cost of chip sealing a driveway.
New construction has a lot of pressure to get the project completed. Often at the end of a building project, the pavement is one of the last steps to complete a project and make it look the way the owner has envisioned it. We the weather and season are not right we say no. When the required dry weather, temperature and job conditions can not able to be met we will not push to do an installation that is destined for failure.
New construction chip sealing when the pavement is just placed and a sound surface is less costly per square foot since patching and repair work is not required. Chip sealing over a driveway that is starting to deteriorate will cost more to chip seal it since more work is required to repair the surface to be sealed. Without the required repairs the end result will not be a long lasting chip sealed driveway.

Chip seal cost per square foot
When a chip seal contractor estimates a project, the price is based on the cost per square foot. The quote you get may not list a cost per square foot but that is units the contractor is using to figure the job. Then that cost per is adjusted up or down to compensate for the difficulty of the job and total size of the project. So if the area to be chip sealed is long paths and the trucks carrying the stone and hot asphalt cement cannot get down the paths a provision is made for that in the price per square foot
The cost per square foot on a chip seal project is almost always less than pavement for the same area. The variables in quoting a price here on a website are too large to give a set range. The variables are too great on any project to just go with a set price. It is not like calling in to get a quote on getting your gutters cleaned. The time, labor and materials required are too large just to average it out.
There is no set cost per square foot for chip seal on a driveway
With the variables involved and wanting to do the best possible job, we need to visit any proposed project and see the conditions. Site preparation can vary widely and doing the right preparation is such a big factor in the job. A high quality durable chipseal project is dependent on the good preparation. The last thing you want to do is have your selected chip seal contractor get to the job that was priced too low, and they feel that they have to cut costs on the project since the preparation will be the first place that cutting corners starts.
We offer a free quote for any chip seal project and will come to see the conditions. On the site visit, we will also go over any issues we see and fully explain what we plan to do.
Stone selection is related to the cost of chip sealing a driveway.
Red Chip Stone
An additional factor that plays into what it costs to chip seal a driveway is. Red stone trucked in from a distant supplier is more than native stone sourced locally. So it only makes sense that the cost rises if you choose an expensive colored stone or a color that cannot be sources nearby.

Without the required repairs the result will not be a long-lasting chip sealed driveway and a dissatisfied. There have been other contractors that have “proven” that chipseal does not last; we are not one of them. We take the time to know the situation and do it right if the conditions are right for chip sealing.
Chip sealing cost is not the only consideration
Cost is not the only part of the equation in considering chip sealing a driveway. The value received from a chip seal project is a very durable distinctive pavement surface. Maintenance of the driveway surface is virtually non-existent. Remember, you don’t have to deal with applying or hiring someone to put down those messy driveway sealers every other year. That saves time and money as well. With the stone bonded to the pavement, the color of the driveway lasts for the length of its service life.
