Driveway Design

“Good driveway design is all about the arrival experience,” says Charles A. Birnbaum, founder and president of The Cultural Landscape Foundation http://tclf.org/landscapes/what-are-cultural-landscapes, a non-profit based in Washington. “Whether the driveway is long or short, as you arrive at a destination, the driveway says something special about the place,” he says. “You want it to create an opportunity, to tell you what’s coming.” Your driveway is often a large portion of the property. So becomes an important part of your landscaping because it gives guests and neighbors that first impression of your home or estate, how it is unique or like all the others in the area. It not only should look good but should be functional. Most driveways get daily or frequent traffic in and out every day. That means in addition to looking good, it needs to be both durable and functional.

We do know of one very high-end property that is deluxe. There is a loose stone driveway. We are told that every time a vehicle leaves the driveway, the driveway is hand raked to cover up the tracks the vehicle has left behind in the stone.

Modern driveways can typically be solid nondescript masses of asphalt or concrete, leading directly to the garage door, rather than providing a graceful arrival to the front door. Asphalt driveways can be older weathered looking with the asphalt cement worn off the top so the color of the stone in the mix shows through. Or it can be recently pavement that is crisp and uniformly black. Then the third example would be a driveway that is seal coated. They can get that shiny gray patina to them that is like pavement but not really. It is all up to the owner’s preference and aesthetics of the situation.

In designing a driveway for your home choices such as angles of approach, the width, and layout of your driveway will impact how accessible your home is. A chip seal driveway gives you the opportunity to add in design factors such as the color and texture of the driveway surface.

Reasons to Select a Chip Seal Driveway

Chip seal opens up the choices. An added benefit to just designing a driveway chip sealing both resurfaces and seals the drive in addition to a designer look. You can customize the appearance by selecting gravel in various sizes and colors, including imported exotic gravels.

In driveway design size, space and color are all a consideration. Some times it is hard to picture what something would look like. To the left is a digitally edited picture to show what a driveway would look like if it had been paved. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so take a look and click on the picture to see a larger view.

Chip seal is an option to consider along with other surface options like decorative concrete, brick pavers, oyster shells, loose gravel, crushed brick, and other pavement materials. As a chip seal contractor, we feel chip sealing is a great solution. Chip seal can be applied to an existing asphalt driveway. In this case, it will eliminate the need for a messy, time-consuming excavation project.

Chip Seal is Beautiful

Because it is a real stone surface, a chip seal provides a natural, upscale appearance that is warm and elegant. When you turn into your driveway, you will experience a tremendous feeling of satisfaction. A Chip Seal drive can transform your home into an “estate” or a country cottage.

Chip Seal is Practical

Unlike brick pavers or loose gravel drives, chip seal is compatible with snow removal services, installs over the existing driveway and does not change how the driveway fits the current properties grades.

It’s hassle-free

The durable material requires no annual sealing treatment and will last for many years, remaining more flexible than bear asphalt and concrete surfaces, lessening the likelihood of cracking.

Chip seal is affordable

Even though it is as attractive as other driveway surface options and certainly more desirable, the overall cost is less than brick pavers, stamped concrete, and even asphalt replacement.
